*I hope all of you are having a blessed Fourth of July! As we celebrate this great day in our Nation’s history, let us be particularly mindful of the men and women who serve our country in the Armed Forces. Their dedication to protecting freedom gives us the opportunity to enjoy such things as religious freedom.
*As I celebrated Mass this morning I was particularly conscious of the words, “Blessed are You, Lord, God of all creation, through Your goodness we have this bread to offer…” I remembered a Vietnamese bishop who shared how he was imprisoned in Communist Vietnam, unable to celebrate Mass with his people. During his time in prison, he befriended one of the guards who would bring him an occasional grape. The bishop would save a morsel of bread from his meal and, in his prison cell, he would put the tiny crumb in the palm of his hand and squeeze a drop of juice out of the grape and celebrate Mass. Mass--with a crumb of bread and a drop of juice on the altar of his hand. Can you imagine what those words must have meant to him—“Blessed are You, Lord, God of all creation, through Your goodness we have this bread to offer…” God, help us to never take for granted our freedom…
